INTRODUCTION TO FOIL PRINTINGFoil Printing is an age-old technique originally revived in Italy at the start of 20th century. Foil printing is to print some pattern with the foil on the fabric for shiny effect. Foil printing is a special kind of printing procedure where heat, pressure, and a metallic paper (foil) is used to create different shiny designs and graphics on various materials. Foil stamping gives the stamped design a shiny and incredible look making printed fabric more fashionable.
KRISHNA DIGISILK HISTORYMr Satish Uniyal - founder of Krishna Digisilk shared "I started this company along with my father in 2008 with foil printing method where we exclusively do foil printing. Foil printing has found many applications and is increasing in popularity as a method of printing in textile material like T Shirts, Kurtas, Shawls, Upholstery, etc. For 4 to 5 years we were doing very good and then enquiries for digital printing started to come in, it is then when I started thinking about digital printing."
Foil can be transferred upon the fabric by generally two ways; either the adhesive is applied on the Foil by means of Engraved design roll and after that by the help of Thermal pressure the foil gets transferred on the fabric. This technique is called foil transfer print. This process is useful if on the finished dyed or printed fabric outlines or some additional effect is required.
In the other process, for the first stage the adhesive is transferred to the fabric by means of screen on a Flat Bed Print Machine or Table. This fabric is now sent to Foil Stamping Machine where there is unwinding device for fabric & foil roll to simultaneously pass through. Then sent to a hot stamping device where the foil is transferred to the fabric where adhesive has been applied. These go to winding section where foil & fabric are separated and individually wound. This technique is called smog transfer print.
"I wanted to venture into digital printing but I always wanted to do something which was different from what others were doing, I wanted to do something unique. After researching, I found out about the digital printing with pigment inks. This was totally a unique concept" adds Mr. Satish.
A wide range of applications spanning from textile dyeing to pattern printing makes the pigment ink process more and more popular on the market. Pigment inks have a lot of benefits such as a high light resistance. They are considered as universal inks" because they can be applied directly on a large range of textile substrates without sophisticated or environmentally unfriendly pre- or post-treatments.
Water-based pigment inks usually require only simple dry heat for a few minutes as a post-treatment process and no special pre-treatment.
